Strengthening Technical Capacity to Accelerate Green Building Implementation in Indonesia

Bandung, Indonesia, 28-31 October 2025 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, organized the first batch of the Training on Green Building Parameters at the Center for Water Resources and Settlement Development Competency in Bandung, West Java.

The training is part of GGGI’s Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) Project, which supports Indonesia’s ambition to accelerate the transition toward low-carbon buildings. Through this initiative, GGGI and the Government of Indonesia aim to strengthen technical capacity and bridge knowledge gaps among professionals in the building sector, including engineers, architects, and government officials, to promote the implementation of green building, energy audit, and energy management standards.

Over the course of four days, participants engaged in theoretical learning, practical exercises, and group discussions covering the core components of green building standards, including energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and the use of environmentally friendly materials, guided by the Ministerial Regulation of Public Works and Public Housing No. 21 of 2021 on Green Building Performance Assessment.

During the opening session, Kuswara, ST., M.A., Director of Building and Environmental Sanitation Engineering Development, Ministry of Public Works, highlighted that technical training is essential to accelerate the adoption of green building standards nationwide.

“This Green Building Performance Assessment training reflects a strong collaboration between the Government of Indonesia—through the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources—and GGGI under the ALCBT Project. The initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of green building practices and support the transition toward low-carbon buildings, thereby contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Through this training, we expect to strengthen the sector’s capacity by developing skilled professionals and experts in green building, ultimately supporting the Government of Indonesia’s climate mitigation efforts in the building sector,” said Kuswara.

The sessions also introduced the concept of net-zero carbon buildings, emphasizing how energy efficiency and innovative design can reduce emissions across a building’s lifecycle. Participants learned to apply building performance assessment tools, conduct case studies, and calculate energy and resource efficiency indicators to evaluate environmental impact. Through team-based exercises, they analyzed real building designs and identified opportunities to enhance performance, efficiency, and sustainability.

Diyan Lesmana, a participant from Surabaya, shared: “After joining this training, I gained a lot of new knowledge and insights on how to apply Green Building standards. I hope to implement this knowledge in my hometown, Surabaya, especially in buildings with high carbon intensity—such as commercial and public facilities—by introducing more energy-efficient designs and sustainable practices that can support our transition toward a low-carbon future.”

By the end of the program, participants were equipped with the knowledge, tools, and practical skills to implement green building principles in their work. The training also serves as a preparatory step for the Green Building Expert certification under the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP), contributing to Indonesia’s growing network of certified green building professionals.

About ALCBT

The Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) Project seeks to significantly reduce GHG emissions by catalyzing nationwide transitions towards low-carbon buildings in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In Indonesia, the project is supporting the Government of Indonesia’s efforts to achieve its Net-Zero Emission target by 2060 through low-carbon building adoption through building emission assessment tools development, capacity building, regulatory strengthening, and financing facilitation.
