ALCBT in Thailand
Overview
In Thailand, the buildings sector accounted for 20.9% of the final energy consumption in 2018. Greenhouse gas emissions from this sector arise from building construction, material production, and electricity consumption by appliances and systems (including cooling).
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) gears the Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) project towards reducing such carbon footprint, not just in Thailand, but also in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. With funding from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the initiative targets the high energy consumption and inefficiencies in building practices that have contributed to rising emissions.
Running from 2023 to 2028, in collaboration with Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, the project will support the nation’s efforts to reduce emissions by up to 40% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Key strategies include standardizing tools and systems for managing carbon emissions from buildings, improving building codes, promoting energy-efficient designs, mobilizing financing, and enhancing the technical capacity of stakeholders.
Aiming to catalyze a nationwide transition towards low-carbon buildings, the multi-stakeholder project envisions a thriving market for energy-efficient building technologies and services.
