ALCBT Training on Green Building Parameters Strengthens Capacity for Low-Carbon Buildings in Indonesia

Jakarta, Indonesia, 19-22 January 2026 – As Indonesia accelerates efforts to reduce emissions from its building sector, turning green building policies into measurable performance outcomes remains a key challenge. To address this, building professionals from government institutions and the private sector gathered in Jakarta to strengthen their practical understanding of green building performance parameters, the technical benchmarks that guide energy efficiency, resource use, and environmental quality in buildings.

Organized by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works under the Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) Project, the Training on Green Building Parameters was delivered during a three-day program focused on strengthening technical capacity to apply green building performance parameters consistently across the building lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and operation.

The program was officially opened by Kuswara, S.T., M.A., Director of Building Technical Development and Environmental Sanitation at the Ministry of Public Works, who emphasized the importance of technical capacity development in accelerating the nationwide adoption of green building standards.

“This training reflects strong collaboration between the Government of Indonesia and GGGI under the ALCBT Project. By strengthening technical capacity, we aim to accelerate the implementation of green building practices and support Indonesia’s transition toward low-carbon buildings,” he stated.

Throughout the training, participants explored the practical application of green building performance parameters through technical modules, case studies, and interactive exercises. Key topics included energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, and the use of environmentally friendly materials, guided by Ministerial Regulation of Public Works and Public Housing No. 21 of 2021 on Green Building Performance Assessment.

The training also highlighted the close interlinkages between green building, energy auditing, and energy management as complementary approaches to reducing emissions from the building sector. Through group discussions and practical exercises, participants gained hands-on experience in assessing building performance and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and sustainability.

Participants emphasized that green building implementation must go beyond technical solutions and address human behavior and everyday practices.

“Environmentally friendly principles must be understood and applied from the earliest stages of architectural design. Green building is not only about reducing energy consumption in buildings, but also about encouraging more energy-efficient habits by placing people and building users at the center of the design,” said Prof. Dr. Sri Nastiti, Lecturer in Architecture at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya.

Participants also highlighted the relevance of the training in supporting Indonesia’s climate targets and its practical application in professional practice across regions.

“This training is very important for professionals from various provinces and cities, as it provides a platform to contribute ideas and support the achievement of Indonesia’s net-zero emission targets under the NDC. Through a step-by-step approach focusing on energy efficiency and the transition toward low-carbon buildings, the training has strengthened my technical understanding. I plan to apply the knowledge gained—particularly in building performance calculations and design—in my work within the construction industry,” said Prasetyo, a Professional Expert Team, participant from DKI Jakarta.

Following the training, participants will undertake a certification examination as part of the process to become certified Green Building professionals under the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP).

As the building sector accounts for a significant share of national energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening professional expertise is critical to achieving Indonesia’s enhanced NDC. Through the ALCBT Project, GGGI supports the Government of Indonesia in bridging technical and knowledge gaps related to green building, energy auditing, and energy management, helping ensure that policies and standards can be effectively implemented on the ground.

About ALCBT

The Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) Project seeks to significantly reduce GHG emissions by catalyzing nationwide transitions towards low-carbon buildings in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In Indonesia, the project is supporting the Government of Indonesia’s efforts to achieve its Net-Zero Emission target by 2060 through low-carbon building adoption through building emission assessment tools development, capacity building, regulatory strengthening, and financing facilitation.
